Fabulous gadget
If you like apple crisp, pie, etc., this gadget is a MUST. I've been peeling, coring, and slicing apples by hand for years, but this takes all the hard work out of my favorite desserts. In seconds, the apple is all clean and ready to bake. Great for pears, too. I have a dehydrator and I've made dried pears and apples for Christmas gifts for people this year using this handy device. I even got my boyfriend to help me because it's so fun to use...and he never cooks!All of the blades are replaceable, so there is nothing to every wear out. I'm assuming this is the cast iron version of the device. I can't vouch for the aluminum version. The cast iron model is like something my grandmother would have had...rare to find this kind of quality in a gadget these days. No plastic!

Great product, but don't buy it here
This is a great peeler. Cook's Illustrated rated it as the best mechanical peeler. I had a very similar looking one that I bought last year, but it wasn't as well made as the A505 and it didn't work as well.That said, these merchants are a total ripoff. This thing does not weigh 15 pounds and I have no clue why they are charging so much for shipping. I bought mine through cooking dot com, for only a few dollars more and with free shipping.Interestingly, it appears as though Williams Sonoma stores also sell this peeler, though it is repackaged with their name one it. It still has "Back to Basics" stamped on the base, though.

An absolute must have .....
... I've had one of these for years now, essential for handling apples in any amount .... the blade is still sharp, works like the day I bought it ..... so glad to see it's more widely available, I would hate to be without one .... makes a great gift for 'newbie' households.... This is a really good apple peeler. The blade is wider than in standard peelers (the red ones where you put the apple sideways) so it peels the apple faster. It peels around the top and bottom of the apple, missing only the parts right above and below the core, so after coring the apple there's no skin left--no touch-ups required. It comes with a corer, a corer/slicer, two extra blades, and little plastic covers for the blade and prongs. It's easy to clean.The cons: It looks like it belongs in a toy chest, so if you pride yourself on your beautiful Martha Stewart kitchen you're going to want to put this away after using it rather than leave it displayed. It doesn't work well at all on potatoes--even when you cut them in half first, it still misses lots of spots and carves them into apple shapes. There are four plastic suction cups on its base to keep it from moving while you're using it, and you have to wet them to make them work. It only takes a few drops of water,...

A better apple peeler!
I have had the apple peeler style with the red handle for about 12 years, and when the prongs that hold the apples started to break off, I finally had an excuse to get rid of it. It had the following problems. 1: The metal screw that twisted to push the apple got black stuff all over your hands when you touched it, which was neccessary to get the apples on and off the prongs. Not something desirable when working with food. 2: To core the apples, they had to be sliced very thinly, not optimal for pies, for example. 3: It didn't work well on small or irregularly shaped apples. This clear plastic apple peeler allows you to peel the apples, then slice them however you want. It peels apples faster than the other, and it comes with a corer that doesn't require slicing, and a corer/slicer that cuts the apples into eigths. Both work well. I was very happy with this product. I used it as soon as I got it to make an Apple Dapple cake. It worked wonderfully and only took me about 3 minutes to peel slice and core 4 apples! I would recommend it highly!

Works Well - Recommended!
We found the Apple Peeler on sale at a home store and bought it on an impulse. My expectations were fairly low and I am happy to say that it performed way better than it looked like it was going to. The only real issue is with the very poor instructions, so some trial and error testing was needed.The keys to getting good results are:1) Use symmetrical Apples or Potatoes2) The firmer the better3) Take time align the Apple so the core can be cleanly removedSetting the contraption up is very easy. The base firmly attaches to most flat surfaces via a suction cup, which is nice because it can be positioned over our sink to catch the peels.We love how quickly this peels and cores a lot of apples! Our kids also got a kick out of using it, so that was a big plus as well.Recommended!

Endured the test of time
I have had my Norpro apple/potato peeler for over 10 years and it's still going strong. I make lots of apple pies and crisps and use it for freezing apples in season. You won't be disappointed with this brand. I'm buying one today for my DIL who borrows my peeler all the time.It doesn't peel those gigantic apples very well, so buy the bags of smaller apples when using this peeler.

Apple Master Rocks!
This handy little device will save you hours of work if you like to make apple pies! It is very easy to work, easy to clean, and you can get 10-12 apples peeled, cored, and sliced in less than five minutes. You can also use it to peel potatoes, although I use mine just for apples. Trust me, it is awesome. The only bummer is that big genetically modified apples do not work, so get the bagged little ones. It is also a learning curve as to how to position the apples. But if you love to make apple pies, you will LOVE this!

My Mother and Dad have had one of these for years - in the fall we pass it between families for our apple peeling - it makes fast work of peeling- now I bought one for my brother for Christmas and he loves it. This little machine is very easy to use and keep clean. It peels, cores and slices an apple in 5 seconds, the faster you crank the handle, the better.The peeler comes ready to peel, core and slice but you can change the setting to core and slice or peel only.****Important: Read the manual before using the peeler because you'll have to align the peeling and cutting blades (turning the screw clockwise increases the angle of the peeling arm). Also, make sure that the slicing blade is completely centered and that the fork, which holds the apple, passes cleanly through the coring ring).
