Before talking about the content of this book I should mention that although this BiblioBazaar vesion is put together nicely as a paperback, the printing quality is not that great. It certainly isn't unreadable but there are some occassional erors and smudges and the general quality of the lettering is a bit low. It is probably nothing that most readers would be concerned about, including myself.The book includes an introduction, The Instructions of Ptah-Hotep, The Instructions of Ke'gemni, and The Instructions of Amenemhet along with some reference information. The buyer should note that these are all very short.The introduction is actually the longest portion at 30 pages. I felt it started out a bit pompous but it actually turned out to be full of very interesting information about Ancient Egypt and about the texts that follow. This book's main body is the same as the other Kindle versions available from Amazon. The only difference is some versions have a "Wisdom of the East" recommended reading list at the end. You can Google a better list. So, only buy the $0 Kindle version.If you are an adult, with a self examined life experience of moral reasoning, you won't learn anything new from Ptah Hotep. However, that it is the oldest book still reprinted, and may inscribe your personal moral code, validated by a sage of ancient ages - means it is worth reading, makes it a keeper for your library. A definition of "sanity" is: reality commonly experienced. This book, if you agree with its prescripts, will provide you with the comfort of being in the lived majority of any time. <p align=justify>The Maxims of Ptahhotep <br /> <br />Ptahhotep was the city administrator and vizier (first minister) during the reign of Djedkare Isesi in the 5th Dynasty. He is credited with authoring The Instruction of Ptahhotep, an early piece of Egyptian "wisdom literature" meant to instruct young men in appropriate behavior. <br /> <br />Ptahhotep's grandson, Ptahhotep Tshefi, is traditionally credited with being the author of the collection of wise sayings known as The Maxims of Ptahhotep, whose opening lines attribute authorship to the vizier Ptahhotep: Instruction of the Mayor of the city, the Vizier Ptahhotep, under the Majesty of King lsesi. They take the form of advice and instructions from a father to his son and are said to have been assembled during the late Old Kingdom. However, their oldest surviving copies are written in Middle Egyptian dating to the late First Intermediate Period' of the Middle Kingdom. <br /> <br />The 1906 translation by Battiscombe Gunn was made directly from the papyrus in Paris, rather than from copies. <p align="justify">Seth proudly presents Horus to the other gods, demeaning him by telling the gods he had tricked Horus into having sexual relations with him as though Horus was a woman. Also within Instruction of Ptahhotep , it instructs a man how to behave with his wife. The taboo is not so much the homosexual relationship itself, but the action of one man dominating another, one man acting out of the norm as a woman. The gods cannot grant Horus his father’s throne when it is obvious to them, believing Seth’s words, that Horus is but a woman. In some versions of the myth, Horus freely lays with Seth, in others, he consults his mother, Isis, before allowing Seth to lay with him. [2] In this case it is disgraceful, not that two men had sexual relations, but that one man dominated another man. <a href="http://buydds.com/Buy-Vacant-Land-56.html">What</a> is not stated in the above text is whether it is immoral for one man to love another man. [1] One of the most popular pieces of ancient Egyptian literature featuring homosexual relations is the myth of Horus defeating Seth. Within these instructions include how a man is to act, not only in respect to himself, but to others, to his wife, to his superiors, to his equals, and to those inferior to him. A papyrus dating to the Nineteenth Dynasty (1298-1187 BC), though the original manuscript has been supposed to date to the late Middle Kingdom (the Eleventh and Twelfth Dynasties, 2134-1802 BC) due to the linguistics, may show a homosexual... Here, the instructions are clear, that a man should be kind, though strict with his wife, that she should not be mistreated, nor should she be allowed too much freedom.</p>
<p align="justify">She also points out that the absence of maxims regarding the vizierate, the highest office in the <a href="http://buydds.com/Buy-Vacant-Land-56.html">land</a>, make it unlikely that the author was a vizier. If he authored the instruction under this name, then it dates from 2450-2300 BCE.</p>
