B. H. Roberts....Seeker of the Truth
This book is a collection of a series of writings by B.H. Roberts who died in 1933, but attained rank as an LDS General Authority before he died. B.H. Roberts was the very antithesis of a dogmatic, inflexible, religious fanatic. B.H. wrote a great deal throughout his life on the Church. It must be remembered that he wrote "The Truth, the Way, the Light" and a "Comprehensive History of the Church". Anyone who reads the book should make certain they review the introduction written by the late Sterling McMurrin. McMurrin points out that B.H. wrote many books defending the LDS faith and this collection of writings has to be viewed in the context. However, after reading "Studies of the Book of Mormon" one really has to ask what Roberts believed about the Church when he died. The answer may not be simple, but in my view its unimportant. In one series of writings, Robert tries to scientifically answer questions such as whether horses could...

LDS Historian's Discovery of Book of Mormon background
B. H. Roberts was one of the 26 general authorities of the Mormon Church from 1890 to 1933. He was appointed Church Historian and in his day was considered the most accurate and unbiased authority for early Mormon history and was regarded as a great defender of the faith. He was a thorough researcher and prolific writer. Among his many books was the seven volume "Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." I consider his "Studies of the Book of Mormon" the most reliable and interesting backgound information on the Book of Mormon.Roberts wrote the material on his studies just a few years before his death but never published it. About 1985 his family finally released the manuscript for publication. He made an excellent study of the environment and source material available to Joseph Smith in the 1820's.Divided into three parts the first part of "Studies of the Book of Mormon" Roberts deals with his quandry in...

A Required Read
This book should be a requirement for anyone studying the Book of Mormon. B.H. Roberts was the first Mormon apologist, President of the First Quorum of Seventies and Mormon Church Historian. B.H. Roberts was additionally recognized as the Mormon Church's most accomplished scriptorian of his day. Apostle Talmage gave Roberts five questions that had been asked by a member. B.H. Roberts researched the questions and went to the Twelve and First Presidency and said he could not give satisfactory answers to the questions. He asked for the Brethren to pray about the questions and get the answers from God. Each of the Brethren stood, bore their testimony of the Book of Mormon and the meeting was over. Roberts was then asked to come up with the best answers he could. These answers were given to the member who originally asked the questions. This started Roberts on the mission of proving or disproving the Book of Mormon. He reviewed the book for inconsistencies in...

Product Description

BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR, JOHN WHITMER HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION Available for the first time fifty years after the author's death, Studies of the Book of Mormon presents this respected church leader's investigation into Mormonism's founding scripture. Reflecting his talent for combining history and theology, B. H. Roberts considered the evident parallels between the Book of Mormon and Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews, a book that predated the Mormon scripture by seven years. If the Book of Mormon is not historical, but rather a reflection of the misconceptions current in Joseph Smith's day regarding Indian origins, then its theological claims are suspect as well, Roberts asserted. In this and other research, it was Roberts's proclivity to go wherever the evidence took him, in this case anticipating and defending against potential future problems. Yet the manuscript was so poorly received by fellow church leaders that it was left to Roberts alone to decide whether he had overlooked some important piece of the puzzle or whether the Mormon scripture's claims were, in fact, illegitimate. Clearly for most of his colleagues, institutional priorities overshadowed epistemological integrity. But Roberts's pathbreaking work has been judged by the editor to be methodologically sound--still relevant today. It shows the work of a keen mind, and illustrates why Roberts was one of the most influential Mormon thinkers of his day. The manuscript is accompanied by a preface and introduction, a history of the documents' provenances, a biographical essay, correspondence to and from Roberts relating to the manuscript, a bibliography, and an afterword--all of which put the information into perspective. Indispensable Mormon and American History
B. H. Roberts' classic account of the Mormon establishment in Illinois and subsequent expulsion from the state is tendentious, impassioned, and plain-spoken; and these are some of the qualities that make this riveting book so notable. Roberts' writing constitutes a refreshing antidote to the modern ivory-tower academic approach to Mormon history, which too often feigns impartiality while betraying an underlying anti-Mormon bias, and even blaming the Mormons for their own difficulties. Not so with Roberts, who does not hesitate to call traitors traitors, dishonor dishonor, and courage courage. The Mormon expulsion from Illinois is not myth but reality, and Roberts' treatment of it is indignant yet measured. The very commentary that offends the academicians' sensibilities is what makes his writing memorable. To many Americans, the story of a religious group being expelled by mobocratic and military force from the country with the approbation of state and federal authorities is...

Old Nauvoo
This book is a must read for Mormons and Non-Mormons. It is a heart-wrenching story of the Saints and their persecutions in Nauvoo. I highly recommend this book!

THE RISE AND FALL OF NAUVOO is a companion volume and stands in historical sequence to "The Missouri Persecutions." It was written with the same object in view, viz., "To place in the hands of the youth of the Latter-day Saints a full statement of the persecutions endured by the early members of The Church in this last dispensation; * * * that they may be made acquainted with the sacrifices which their fathers have made for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ." And I indulge the same hope with reference to this book that I did with respect to "The Missouri Persecutions," viz., that by "becoming acquainted with the story of the sufferings of the early Saints, the faith of the Gospel will become all the more dear to the hearts of their immediate posterity, and all the youth of Zion, for many generations to come." Reprint Classic of a Classic History
Elder B. H. Roberts was a maverick, and that is what makes this history so interesting. He was able to mix the good and the bad, the agony and the ecstasy of the history of Nauvoo: the City of Joseph.I think that Elder Roberts was born in the right time to write such a book. He knew many of the displaced citizens of Nauvoo, but he also knew that many of the rising generation needed to know about this great phase in the History of the Church of Jesus Christ. This book has the feel of Elder Roberts' "History of the Church," and "Comprehensive History of the Church." It has a strong reliance on Joseph Smith's journals and diaries, and other primary sources. Moreover, Elder Roberts was not afraid to cite critical sources-or even anti-Mormon sources in telling his story. He was very careful to avoid the sensational and untrue "faith promoting rumors" that fill our testimony meetings. The only criticism is that there are no illustrations, which is more a fault of technology than...

The man behind the mind.
This book is the polished version of Elder B. H. Robert's autobiographical notes that he hastily dictated in his waning years. He had enough sense of history to realize that he himself was a hot historical item. The polished version is in first person, and was obviously dictated, which is an asset. B. H. Roberts was one of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's greatest orators, apologists, and scrappers, so the autobiography has the same rhetorical punchy-ness that that makes reading this book pure eye candy. It is written in the first person, and Elder Roberts exposes his soul as he tells of his early childhood in Dickens's England, his emigration and journey to Salt Lake City, his hardpan life in the west, and his eventual embracing of the Mormonism. This man had one wild life, from rescuing the bodies of two missionaries that had been killed by a mob in the south, to running for the House of Representatives, and being denied a seat because he was a polygamist.I...

Autobiography of B.H. Roberts
I was reading this on an airplane and told some of the stories in the book to the fellow sitting next to me. He was so interested that I just gave him the book so he could read it for himself. This is the story of a 9 year old boy who comes to America from England with his 11 year old sister. The year is about 1867. The two of them cross the ocean, then they cross the country to the Salt Lake Valley in a covered wagon company. It is just amazing how he could survive such an ordeal. He has no shoes for most of the trip, and no coat or change of clothes. His shrit and pants are made from a policeman's coat in England. His sister gives him her slip to cover him at night and then he gives it back to her to wear in the morning. One night he climbs in a barrel to sleep. It has molasses in the bottem. He is too tired to climb our and so sleeps in it anyway. The next morning he is covered with the sticky surup. The only clothes he has are so covered with dust by the end...

Product Description

In this exiting and readable autobiography, one of the most colorful figures of the American frontier recounts his poverty-stricken childhood, his rowdy adolescence in Rocky Mountain mining camps, his unsuccessful bid for the U. S. Congress and his stormy career in one of the leading councils of the Mormon church. Polygamy, womenÂ’s suffrage, prohibition, and separation of church and state all occupy center stage in the unfolding drama of Brigham Henry RobertsÂ’s controversial life. RobertsÂ’s story-book adventures made him a household name during his lifetime. His impassioned speeches incited riots, his reasoned writings defined and codified religious beliefs, and his candid disclosures of Utah history brought him both respect and censure. His best remembered today as a largely self-educated intellectual. Several of his landmark published works are still in print more than sixty years after his death. His life story, told here in his own works and now published for the first time, is revealing and honest and may well stand as his greatest, most enduring achievement. Top to learn more

Great Improvement Over the 900
I used the older SB900 model before this one and was constantly frustrated with the incessant overheating when I was doing event photography. Happily the SB910 corrects this fault to large degree and performs much better in this regard. The unit is easy to use as a basic flash on camera. Just pop it on and you are ready to go. However that is not really using all the potential of the product. There are numerous powerful features built in for off camera flash and modifying the light output for a much more natural look than direct flash. Many Nikon DSLRs can control this unit using their small built-in flash. It's all in the detailed instructions. As far as my experience, the flash has performed perfectly. It cycles quickly provides a great deal of light and helps make amazing pictures. It is also much easier to use than its predecessor. I am very happy with the this flash, so much so that I own two of them.

Happy So Far . . .
I sold my 3-month-old SB-900, and replaced it with the SB-910 just a month ago. I like everything about this flash so far. I also like the hard plastic filters instead of the old flexible films. I did test the flash with my D700, and got well lit photos and spot-on white balance. I will update this review in a few months after using it more.

SB-910 much needed upgrade (from SB-600)
This review is for the Speedlight SB-910. As of the time of this review, this flash's reviews are being combined with the SB-400 and SB-700.I have owned two flash units prior to this, the , and the before that. The jump from the SB-400 to the SB-600 was significant; while the SB-400 worked well in landscape, the inability to tilt the bulb to the side, as well as the lack of CLS/wireless capability, limited lighting profiles to only one or two options. Both the SB-600 and SB-910 have these options, so why bother upgrade? The SB-600 has a zoom range of...

Robert Palmer's second EMI album, originally released in 1990, features 18 tracks including a cover of Dylan's 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight'. Disky. Top to learn more

Underappreciated Set Has Gems For Palmer Fans
1990's Don't Explain lp finds Robert Palmer in an ambitious mood, attempting to highlight both his love of world music and jazz standards on an album featuring trademark hard rock. Essentially, this 18 song collection comes across like three separate mini albums, lacking a sense of cohesiveness when played as a whole, a jarring juxtoposition of divergent musical styles instead of one record. However, there are plenty of gems among the 18 tracks featured. Palmer showcases his love for African influenced melodies with the uptempo "Housework", complete with clever humorous lyrics, and does a credible reggae version of Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Babt Tonight" with help from UB40 believe it or not. Actually, that song was a major hit single in the UK!! The first third of the album is dominated by the rock material, especially on the fast paced guitar driven metal songs "You're Mother Should Have Told You" and "Can't Get Enough Of A Good Thing"...

IMPRESSIVE & VARIED
There are hard rock scorchers like "You're Amazing," "Light Years" and You Can't Get Enough" as well as the lovely rock ballad "Dreams To Remember" while the rest charms in a lighter vein with the funky Prince-like "Mess Around," the clever "History" with its chugging chorus and the UB40-backed "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." The glittering prize however, is the stunning "Housework," an infectious calypso shaker that makes you wanna jump for joy. Cover version include Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me" leading into "I Want You", Billie Holiday's smoky "Don't Explain" with mellifluous phrasing by Mr Smooth, and the jazzy "Top 40," and this impressive album bows out with two archaic ballads.

Bh Roberts

” Roberts wanted the state constitution to include anti-monopoly provisions and a ban on state subsidies of private enterprise, “warning that otherwise legislators would be incessantly courted by men begging public aid to build private fortunes. Later, in the early 1930s, Roberts embraced the doctrine of socialism: “a new economic policy, for a new age, to take the place of the capitalistic system and its spirit, wherein shall exist more equality and more justice than in the age now passing. Roberts, a member of the First Council of the Seventy, is better known for his efforts as an apologist than as a politician, but this is a man who was regarded by some of his contemporaries as the most prominent Democratic orator in the state of... “One great evil that threatens our land and which promises to overthrow the institutions of our country more than any other danger,” he wrote, “is that of corporate power, and unless a limit be placed upon the lines of business in which these... So with that in mind, I’d like to briefly summarize a few of Roberts’s political positions, which I think provide a fascinating counterpoint to the political talking points we usually associate with the Mormon faithful. Roberts, in fact, was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1898, but the House refused to seat him because he was a practicing polygamist. Roberts was a staunch opponent of any effort to legislatively prohibit alcohol. Roberts also played an important role in shaping the state constitution when Utah was admitted to the Union. A major early issue for Roberts was the limitation of corporate power.

While it was meant to destroy faith in the Book of Mormon, it was much more effective in raising non-Mormon awareness of the Book of Abraham and redirected much of the Latter-day Saint's attention to addressing issues raised by Spalding. "I want to say to you, read the book, the Pearl of Great Price, and read the Book of Abraham.   The responses by Latter-day Saints acknowledged Bishop Spalding's seemingly courteous approach, but also identified the deceit he employed in masking his true intentions in attacking Latter-day scriptures.   Both the Book of Mormon and the Book of Abraham were translated by the Prophet from various forms of Egyptian writing.

Do the Mormons claim that God made 20,000 mistakes when helping Joseph Smith translate the Book of Mormon. The Mormons actually claim that the Book of Mormon is far superior to the Bible since it was translated into the English language by the power of God. “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts than by any other book” (Joseph Smith, “A Compendium Of The... This claim to inspired translation into the English language will prove to be the Achilles’ heel to the claim of Mormon inspiration. ” In the 1908 edition it was changed to read, “. . . waving the rent part of his garment in the air, that all might see the writing which he had written upon the rent part. Nearly 20,000 changes have been made in the Book of Mormon since the original 1830 edition. Yea with greater authority, since it purports to be not only the word of God, but translated into the English language by the power of God. “By and of the seer stone, sentences would appear, were read by the prophet and written by Martin Harris, and when finished, he would say written, and if correctly written, that sentence would disappear and another would appear in its place. So that the translation was just as it was engraved upon the plates precisely in the language it was written” (Testimony of David Whitmer, one of the original three witnesses to the Book of Mormon). we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God” (Joseph Smith, “Articles of Faith,” Article. Not only do they claim the original plates were inspired but he actual translation into the English language was inspired.

many of the diaries of Roberts and Kesler were actually small pocket-sized notebooks. What could you do better for your children and your children’s children than to record the story of your life, your triumphs over adversity, your recovery after a fall, your progress when all seemed black, your rejoicing when you had finally... We may think them as little of interest or importance in what we personally say or do—but it is remarkable how many of our families, as we pass on down the line, are interested in all that we do and all that we say. Today I have a renewed desire to continue investing time writing in my personal diaries, archiving photos, and updating scrapbooks so that when I am gone, my life story will remain.  Both Roberts and Kesler’s notebooks also contain newspaper clippings, receipts and other scraps and mementos that the author stuffed or pasted inside (the 1800′s version of ”scrapbooking”). Get a notebook, my young folks, a journal that will last through all time, and maybe the angels may quote from it for eternity. “On a number of occasions I have encouraged the Saints to keep personal journals and family records. ” – President Kimball Speaks Out On Personal Journals , Dec. Kimball, I am a strong believer in the power and importance of journal keeping.
